Yggdrasill: Whose Roots Are Stars in the Human Mind

This film, a combination of hand-painting and photography, is a fulsome exposition of the themes of DOG STAR MAN. In that early epic I had envisioned The World Tree as dead, fit only for firewood; and at end of DOG STAR MAN I had chopped it up amidst a flurry of stars (finally Cassiopia’s Chair): now, these many years later, I am compelled to comprehend YGGDRASILL as rooted in the complex electrical synapses of thought process, to sense it being alive today as when nordic legendry hatched it. I share this compulsion with Andrei Tarkovsky, whose last film The Sacrifice struggles to revive The World Tree narratively, whereas I simply present (one might almost say “document”) a moving graph approximate to my thought process, whereby The Tree roots itself as the stars we, reflectively, are.

De Profundis

De Profundis is a three part, hand/alternative-processed experimental film based on Oscar Wilde’s prison letter De Profundis. Incorporating home movies from the 1920’s and early gay male erotica along with images from Radical Faerie gatherings, queer pagan rituals, drag performances and images of confinement, this 65 minute film sets up a haunting investigation of queerness, masculinity, history and sexuality. These images are buttressed against a soundtrack composed of Wilde’s aphorisms, a voice and piano setting of Wilde’s prison letter, and multi-tracked interviews with a diverse group of contemporary gay men.

Murphy's Irish Stout: Last Orders

This commercial film was commissioned by the famous Ireland-based Murphy's Brewery to promote their Irish Stout. Founded in 1865 in the city of Cork, Murphy's Brewery is said to be the greatest competitor of Guinnes. The British AD agency Nexus Productions expressly asked I.G for a Ghost in the Shell flavour, as Oshii's groundbreaking movie had just been released in the UK creating great sensation around Japanese animation. I.G mustered a dream team that would be unthinkable (and unfeasible) today: Hiroyuki Kitakubo (Blood: The Last Vampire) as helmer, Kazuchika Kise (Ghost in the Shell, Innocence) as character designer and animation supervisor, and Hiromasa Ogura (Jin-Roh) in charge of the background art. The 60-second film features six fierce samurai who rush through a post-futuristic megalopolis using the most unpredictable means of transport (including a kite!) as to make it on time for the last order at their favourite pub. As the first anime style commercial film ever aired in the UK, Last Orders attracted much attention, and was presented by the local press as "the new Murphy's commercial made by the creators of Ghost in the Shell."

Like a good short film should, The Saint Inspector makes up for in quality what it loses in length. The narrative is deliciously one-dimensional and simple (there's a saint, there's a saint inspector: the latter inspects the first) but the visual flair and style and the overall impact are stunning. Psychedelics on celluloid! If you like: check out the feature-length "The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb" (1993) by the same production company.

类型片大赏

“Genre” 是才华横溢的Don Hertzfeldt的另一部优秀的动画作品。在这部作品中，他画一只兔子在一张纸上，让它来表演各种类型的电影。那只兔子先后表演了浪漫片，科幻片，儿童片，甚至还有色情片。慢慢地，动画家失去了他的创意，他开始尝试结合各种流派创造出了一个新类型的电影，所以很突然地，兔子开始表演起一场灾难色情片。 　　在“Ah,L’Amour” 这部已经不错的喜剧动画之后，Hertzfeldt的才华又在这部“Genre” 喜剧动画中得到进一步发展。“Genre” 是部富有创造性和完美的动画，但它的表现方法显然不适合所有的人，因为它需要作者有足够的才华来将如此简单的想法展现地淋漓尽致。同样，作者的才华也体现在了“Billy's Ballon” 和“Rejected”这两部作品中，实在不容错过。
